I, Denielle, had a very good class today! It was good in that I learned a lot, talked a lot, and was able to understand most of what our teacher spoke in Portuguese! We talked about life in Rio Grande do Sul, about strawberries, about work and education, and of course, about my homework. :) In our conversations, our teacher told me some very interesting information concerning Alzheimer's. She said that when she was in the university down in Rio Grande do Sul, she did much research about Alzheimers and its link to learning a second language. She and others found that those who had learned a second language did not suffer from the disease! Because the brain is heavily engaged in so many ways when learning another language than one's mother tongue, according to the research, Alzheimers is prevented from setting in! Our teacher and other faculty at her university had a class designed just for older folks to teach them another language in the hopes of preventing their suffering from that very sad disease. So interesting!!
I don't know what other information is out there concerning Alz., but this was sure welcome news!
