Moses did it well. Though sitting in a privileged position as God's chosen leader of His people, Moses was able to see the big picture as he lead Israel into God's will. From that day in the wilderness at the bush that would not be consumed, through the heated and dangerous confrontations with Pharaoh, he saw God work in exciting ways.
So did the rest of the Hebrew nation. I am humbled by their short sightedness each time I read the story in the early chapters of Exodus. They would see their own deliverance if they could get past whatever hunger or thirst or pestilence was right in front of them. "I will only be redeemed from Egypt," they might say, "as long as I've got interstate highways, airports, Starbucks Coffee, Perkins Restaurants, and Comfort Inn waiting for me as I go." I think that it was only as God made in unbearable for them in Egypt through increased quotas and less time/materials, not to mention persecution and bigotry, that they were willing to leave such a miserable existence behind them.
I see myself here and it is shameful.
